Case Description:

Mesothelioma is a rare but deadly form of lung cancer that is almost always caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos. Victims inhale tiny asbestos fibers that cannot be breathed out. These fibers build up in the body over time, forming plaque and eventually causing cancer in the lining of the lungs. The disease can take decades to manifest, but when it does, the prognosis is grim: conventional treatment does not work well for malignant mesothelioma. Patients are expected to live only about 12 months after diagnosis. Anyone who has lived or worked around asbestos for long periods is at increased risk for mesothelioma; occupations at high risk include construction workers, shipbuilders, miners and plumbers. Men are much more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma than women.
