(<-- 3000 kb pdf file) The rule requires schools to identify asbestos that is present in their buildings, develop a plan to manage that asbestos and reinspect those materials every three years. These three activities are not the only requirements of the rule, but are the most important requirements, and are known as the "Big Three." The Schools Rule "Big Three" Initial Inspection - All schools covered under the rule are required to have an inspection conducted by an accredited inspector to determine the location and condition of the asbestos in the school building, before students occupy the building. Management Plan - A management plan is then developed by an accredited management planner from the information contained in the initial inspection. The management plan is a working document designed to be used to identify asbestos-containing materials in the building, before renovations or maintenance activities are performed. Three Year Reinspection - Every three years following the initial inspection, the school must hire an accredited inspector to evaluate the condition of the asbestos materials identified in the initial inspection.
