Decortation
- The removal of an organ's external layer.

Defendant
- The respondent in a legal case; in asbestos cases, the asbestos company or companies being sued.

Diagnosis
- The process of identifying a disease by its symptoms, signs, and nature.

Diagnostic
- Having to do with diagnosis; the methods used to evaluate and identify a disease.

Diaphragm
- The partition separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities.

Differential diagnosis
- A form of diagnosis in which a patient is determined to have one of two conditions that share symptoms.

Diffuse
- Widely distributed; lacking limits or localization.

Disease
- A sickness or illness.

Dose
- A way in which exposure is measured; the amount of any substance to which an individual is exposed over a period of time. "Exposure dose" refers to how much of a harmful substance is encountered; "absorbed dose" refers to the amount of a harmful substance that is absorbed by the body and later found in the organs or internal tissues. As a rule, larger doses increase the likelihood of harmful effects.

Dose-response relationship
- An expression of relationship between exposure (dose) and resulting change in bodily function (response).

Double-blind
- A type of clinical trial in which participants and doctors do not know which treatment (actual or placebo) a patient is receiving.

Dyspnea
- Painful, difficult breathing or shortness of breath. Dyspnea is an early mesothelioma symptom.
