Idiopathic
- A spontaneous condition, disorder or disease of unknown origin.

Imaging tests
- Diagnostic tools that photograph the lungs, including CT scans and X-rays.

Immunohistochemical
- A diagnostic process in which antibodies and antigens are used to detect organisms within tissues; used to detect and diagnose mesothelioma.

Immunostaining
- A form of biopsy that uses antibody/antigen staining to identify mesothelioma.

Immunosuppressant
- A substance that prevents the body from fighting or resisting foreign substances or illness.

Immunotherapy
- A treatment that induces the body's immune system, encouraging an inflammatory response to destroy disease.

Informed consent
- A discussion of the potential benefits and risks of a clinical trial; the process by which a patient learns what to expect from the trial before choosing whether to participate.

Inhalation
- Breathing in a substance; a means by which a hazardous substance such as asbestos can enter the body.

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
- A form of radiation therapy in which radiation delivery is delivered in the shape of the tumor with the use of computer-generated imagery. Popular for its reduction of damage to non-cancerous tissues near a tumor.

Interferon
- A protein that helps regulate the body's immune responses.

Interstitial disease
- A lung disease characterized by scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs.

Intraoperative photodynamic therapy
- A cancer treatment that uses a combination of drugs and light to kill cancer cells.

Intraperitoneally
- A method of chemotherapy in which anti-cancer drugs are injected directly into the abdominal cavity.

Intrapleurally
- A method of chemotherapy in which anti-cancer drugs are injected directly into the chest cavity.

Intravenous
- Within a vein or blood vessel.

Invasive cancer
- Also known as infiltrating cancer, invasive cancer is in the process of spreading into healthy tissues surrounding the original cancer site.
