-
Macrophage
- An immune cell that destroys particles (phagocytization). These cells digest cellular debris and pathogens; however, in mesothelioma patients, they can split open when they come into contact with asbestos fibers, releasing fluids that damage the alveoli in the lung.
-
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- A diagnostic procedure that uses radio waves and magnets to create detailed view of the body's organs and internal tissues.
-
Malaise
- A feeling of uneasiness or discomfort.
-
Malignant
- Able to spread and destroy healthy tissue; usually malignant cancers indicate a rapid disease progression that can result in death.
-
Median
- A numerical expression used to describe the chances of survival in cancer patients (i.e. median survival is three months, etc.).
-
Mediastinoscopy
- A diagnostic procedure that extracts tissue from the lymph nodes on the chest and allows the inner part of the upper chest to be examined and biopsied.
-
Mediastinum
- The area of the cavity between the two lungs that contains the heart.
-
Mesothelial cells
- Cells that comprise the mesothelium; mesothelial cells line body cavities and surround most internal organs.
-
Mesothelin
- A glycoprotein and cell-surface antigen of unknown biological function.
-
Mesothelioma
- Cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma can occur in the lining of the heart (pericardial), sac lining of the lungs (pleural) or lining of the abdomen (peritoneal).
-
Mesothelium
- A membrane that lines the outer and inner surfaces of most organs, enabling them to move or glide within the body.
-
Metastases(s)/metastasis
- The spread of disease (often cancer) to other sites in the body via the bloodstream or lymph system.
-
Mixed type mesothelioma
- A form of mesothelioma that involves both the mesenchymal and epithelial cells of the mesothelium.
-
Mutagen
- A substance or chemical that causes genetic damage (mutation).
-
Mutation
- Damage or change that occurs within chromosomes, DNA and/or genes.
