Sarcomatous mesothelioma
- A variety of mesothelioma linked to the mesenchymal cells of the mesothelium.

Serpentine asbestos
- A type of asbestos characterized by layered/tiered, curly fibers. White asbestos (chrysotile) belongs to this group and is the most common form of asbestos.

Settlement
- Mutual resolution of a legal dispute before it is decided by a court.

Silica
- The most abundant rock-forming compound on earth, silica is the chief component of sand. Silica is responsible for some forms of cancer and lung disease, but is not related to asbestos.

Sputum
- Mucus produced by the lungs and coughed up, swallowed or spit out.

- A system by which cancer's spread is assessed.

- In asbestos litigation, a defense in which the defendants in a lawsuit claim they did not know about asbestos' hazards.

- A law that lays out a time period during which injured parties have the right to file a lawsuit; the expiration of statute of limitations varies by state.

- Supporting connective tissue of an organ.

Synergistic effect
- When two or more substances cooperate to produce a worsening effect; the combined sum of both substances is greater than one or the other substance acting alone. For example, smoking and asbestos exposure have a synergistic effect on lung health.
