Mesothelioma and Aeronautical Engineering

Asbestos is widely used in aeronautics and as such aeronautical engineers are one of the groups of professionals who are in danger of being exposed to asbestos dust during their work on aircrafts. Although efforts are now being made to replace all aircraft parts that contain asbestos with non-asbestos containing materials, there is still a danger of aeronautical engineers being exposed to asbestos. They should therefore take precautions in order to avoid contracting Mesothelioma.

How Was Asbestos Used in Aircraft?

Asbestos was used in a number of different ways in aircraft including the aircraft brakes, in the seating gaskets, insulation, and fire barriers.

Aeronautical engineers are responsible for designing, developing and testing aircraft. Usually, a number of aeronautical engineers are involved in the building of any aircraft, with each specializing in specific areas such as structural design, navigation and control, or instrumentation. They may even specialize in specific types of aircraft.

Aeronautical Engineers and Exposure to Asbestos

During the course of their work, many aeronautical engineers came in direct contact with asbestos as they had to enter the factory where the actual work on the aircraft that they were designing, developing and testing was occurring. In such an environment, there was a lot of asbestos dust as asbestos-containing aircraft parts were being made or repaired. This led to a higher risk of aeronautical engineers contracting Mesothelioma than those who were not exposed to the asbestos dust.

Asbestos was used widely in many aircraft parts over the years. The aeronautical engineers who were responsible for designing, developing and testing of the aircraft and its parts often had to enter the factory environment where there was a lot of asbestos dust. This meant that they increased their risk of contracting Mesothelioma. In fact, a number of cases have come forward where people believe they contracted Mesothelioma through this exposure.
