Mesothelioma and Electricians
Electricians and Asbestos
Electricians are tradesmen responsible for installing electrical wiring in a variety of buildings, from residential, to commercial, to industrial. Asbestos was widely used in electrical wiring insulation and as such electricians were quite often exposed to asbestos containing material, and were thus one of the occupations at high risk of contracting Mesothelioma.Electricians are responsible for the installation of electrical wiring in buildings and may also work with other electrical equipment in these buildings. Some electricians are also employed in the theatre for hanging and operating stage lighting.
How Electricians Were Exposed to Asbestos
In the past, asbestos was widely used in electrical wiring insulation due to its excellent electrical resistance properties, strength, and durability. Electricians would often cut this wiring in order to install it and would thus be exposed to old electrical wiring while re-wiring an older building. During these processes, asbestos was often released into the air and the electrician was at danger of inhaling the asbestos dust. The Dangers of Asbestos for Electricians
When electricians inhaled this asbestos dust during the course of their work, the asbestos particles could travel to the lungs and could lead to Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.Asbestos and Electricians Today
Although asbestos is no longer used in electrical insulation wiring, there are still buildings that contain old electrical wiring that may contain asbestos. When electricians are called in to work on these buildings, or to remove the asbestos wiring, they may be exposed to the asbestos containing material. They thus need to take careful precautions to avoid inhaling any asbestos dust.
