Asbestos in Elementary Schools
Before the dangers of Mesothelioma and asbestos became known, asbestos containing materials were widely used in schools. When these materials became damaged or broken, elementary teachers as well as others in the school could be exposed to asbestos dust and get Mesothelioma.
Location of Asbestos in Schools
Asbestos could, for example, be found in electrical insulating wire, other insulating materials, ceilings, asbestos sheeting and wall boards, asbestos-cement, and many other materials. Asbestos was also often used as a fireproof covering and some schools were almost completely covered in asbestos to protect them against fire. Asbestos may also have been present in some of the playground equipment used in elementary schools.
The Dangers of Asbestos Containing Materials to Elementary Teachers
Whole, undamaged asbestos-containing materials did not generally present a danger to elementary teachers. However, when that asbestos became damaged or worn, some of the asbestos particles may become airborne, leading to diseases such as Mesothelioma.
Asbestos Awareness Today
Since the 1970’s, government has started taking action and creating awareness about asbestos-related diseases and the dangers of asbestos. Elementary schools are now being examined for asbestos-containing materials and steps are being taken to remove asbestos from schools where it has become a danger.
