Mesothelioma and Forge-men and Hammer-men

Asbestos Exposure Leads to Mesothelioma

A report from Southampton, UK mentions that asbestos is the most important cause of cancer in the UK. Asbestos exposure leads to some 100 cases of bronchial carcinoma and 600+ cases of mesothelioma in the UK every year. The report mentions that recent surveys indicate that the figure for mesothelioma will steadily increase in the next 20-25 years.

Why Is Asbestos Used?

One of the reasons for the immense popularity of asbestos is its capacity to withstand high temperatures. Asbestos is naturally heat and acid resistant. This property made it possible for people to use asbestos reinforced materials in areas where resistance to heat was important – in fireproof clothing and gloves, for instance.

Forge-men and Hammer-men Are Often Exposed to Asbestos

In the early years of the Industrial revolution, forge-men and hammer-men worked without protective gear. All they had were a pair of leather gloves and leather aprons. Safety was the least consideration at the time, but with the advent of asbestos, all this was set to change.

Protection Against Asbestos Exposure

In the 1900s, fire-resistant clothing became popular. Forge-men and hammer-men started using asbestos-lined gloves and protective overalls to ensure safety. This was necessary because these workers were constantly exposed to fire and red-hot pieces of metal.
But due to the very nature of their work, the protective gear they wore was prone to tear and wear. Asbestos fibers are released into the air when asbestos reinforced materials are broken or damaged. Once released, these fibers cling dangerously to clothes, skin, and other surfaces. They slowly make their way into the lungs, where they are lodged permanently. When the concentration of these particles crosses the threshold of tolerance, they trigger diseases like asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

Asbestos Exposure Can Lead to Mesothelioma

Asbestos induced occupational hazards like mesothelioma and cancer are usually the result of continuous exposure over long periods. However, research indicates that in some cases, brief exposure can also lead to such diseases.
