Mesothelioma and Heat Treaters, Annealers, and Temperers

Heat Treaters, Annealers and Temperers and Asbestos

Asbestos has excellent heat-resistant properties. The Greeks who used it for the first time called it a miracle mineral that could not be burnt. In the 1800s and the early 1900s, asbestos was used to prevent the breakout of fire. It was used to insulate homes and factories. Asbestos curtains were placed in theatres and asbestos walls, roofs, and floors were used in homes and schools. People who were exposed to high degrees of heat or fire wore fireproof asbestos cover-alls to protect themselves.

Heat treaters and annealers work with fire, quite literally. They work with hot furnaces and operate machines such as baths, flame-hardening machines, and electronic induction machines.

When Does Asbestos Exposure Occur?

The very nature of their jobs makes these workers prone to asbestos exposure. Heat furnaces spit fire for most parts of a normal working day. People working around it have to use fireproof material to protect themselves. So, personnel manning heat treatment shops were provided with protective equipment and gear that contained asbestos. This included safety glasses, gloves, shoes, hard hats, and aprons.

Heat gauges and pipes can lead to scalds and burns if they are exposed. Because of its high insulation properties, most pieces of equipment were insulated using thick sheets of asbestos.

Asbestos Related Diseases- Mesothelioma

Since they were surrounded by asbestos-enriched material, employees working in heat treatment and tempering shops ran high risks of asbestos exposure. Many of them even used asbestos on their bodies. So the chances of inhaling and ingesting high concentrations of asbestos fibers were very high. Over a period of time, such continual exposure to asbestos dust leads to asbestos related diseases like mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Most asbestos-related diseases surface only 15-25 years after exposure. Many of these diseases like mesothelioma are often misdiagnosed and proper cure starts rather late in the day. If you or anyone in your family has been exposed to asbestos particulate matter, it is vital to contact a good mesothelioma attorney.
