Mesothelioma and Sheet Metal Workers and Tinsmiths
Hazards of Asbestos to Sheet Metal Workers and Tinsmiths
The trade of both, a sheet metal worker and that of a tinsmith, are a lot similar. A tinsmith is a person who works with light color metals called tin ware. Sheet metal workers on the other hand, work with different kinds of metals to make tailgates, outdoor signs, rain gutters, railroad cars, and other items of similar kind. They also work with plastic materials and fiberglass. Sheet metal workers mostly work with maintenance, installation, and fabrication. Thus, both these types of workers need expertise in a range of tools to do their work properly.Use of Asbestos in Construction
Prior to 1970, most of the construction, equipments, and structures contained asbestos as one of the properties of asbestos is that it is resistant to fire and heat. So, the sheet metal workers and tinsmiths, when working with such products and equipments, are bound to be exposed as their jobs necessitate rending and rendering of materials that make the asbestos fibers in the asbestos-containing materials (ACM) airborne. The workers become more susceptible as most of the time they have to work with poor ventilations.More over, the impact of the asbestos caused on the health of the workers, takes twenty to thirty years to take effect. So, the people who have gotten infected before are showing the symptoms of the deadly diseases relating to asbestos only now.
Asbestos-Related Diseases
The workers can develop asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma depending on the technique, tools, and type of product they have used. The products that reportedly have the most asbestos content are siding, boiler coverings, shingles, adhesives, roofing, and cements.Though the government has put strict restrictions on the use of asbestos, the danger of exposure is still high. Those workers who have already incurred the disease are suing the parties they hold responsible. From the cases that have been pending with the State and the Federal court, it has been reported that it is the companies that are being sued most of the time. This has led to another problem of companies closing down due to bankruptcy to pay off the victims.
Asbestos Awareness Today
Pending of lawsuits is due to the fact that the asbestos legislation is undergoing considerable changes at an unprecedented pace. As the legislature is undergoing changes, the present system is quite overwhelmed with the number and the variance in cases being brought forth to the court. Complication has further increased since the outcome of each and every lawsuit has a direct effect on the rulings of the future lawsuits.RAND, a non-profit organization, has been keeping tabs on the amount of claims being made and other dealings regarding the asbestos legislation. According to them, 43 cent of a dollar is the approximate amount that has been going to the asbestos claimant which is at least slightly more than what has been paid before. One of the reasons for the amount being low is the cost of the lawyers. But, there is still hope as considerable improvements are being brought forth with time.
