Hazards of Asbestos to Spinners, Twisters, and Winders

Asbestos was considered a miracle material once, but it turned into a curse. The generic term ‘Asbestos’ refers to a group of six naturally occurring fibrous minerals. The asbestos minerals have high flexibility and tensile strength. But it was one of its other properties that made it extremely popular in the 1940’s. This property was its resistance to heat, chemicals, and electricity. But the dangers of asbestos far outweigh its benefits, because the asbestos fibers are responsible for some of the most deadly diseases like lung cancer, Mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

There are a number of occupations that lead to asbestos exposure. Some of them are tinsmiths, metal sheet workers, shipbuilders etc. Surprisingly, even the textile industries are not spared from exposure to asbestos. Spinners (who twist fibers into threads), Twisters (who twist while manufacturing ropes or yarns), Winders (who wind cloth or materials) have also been reported to be suffering from Mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis that are all related to asbestos exposure.

How Does Asbestos-Exposure Occur?

All the people working in the textile industry, whether as spinners, twisters, or winders have machines that help them achieve their work faster and more efficiently. It is the machines that are often made of asbestos. Thus, while working with them the spinners, twisters, and winders get exposed.

Sometimes, these textile companies fail to mention to their employees that the machines they are working with have the potential to not just make them suffer from deadly forms of cancer like Mesothelioma, but actually kill them. There are a number of other circumstances that lead to asbestos exposure to the spinners, winders, and twisters.

Asbestos and Legal Claims

All these have led to a number of cases and claims being filed. Across the country an approximate 200,000 asbestos claims are pending with the Federal courts and state. According to RAND, a non-profit organization, it has been reported that the number of claims filed during the onset of asbestos legislation alone exceeded approximately 730,000. Though, according to recent reports, almost 90% of the annual claims are non-cancer ones.

The root of the matter is that the asbestos legislation has a long way to go before being actually well developed enough to address the problems brought in by the claims and lawsuits. The current system is a bit overwhelmed. The judges, lawyers, and attorneys are therefore doing their best to reach decisions in cases, as they don’t have a strong legislation to depend on. These have led to less than satisfactory outcomes in many of the cases.

The companies responsible are being forced to pay. Approximately $70 billion in related costs and claims has been paid so far. The number of asbestos defendants also has risen quite sharply. Many of the companies in the textile industry are facing bankruptcy because they have to compensate the number of spinners, twisters, and winders who are the claimants.
