Asbestos Construction Cement

Since the early 1900s, asbestos was often mixed with Portland cement to create an asbestos cement mix that was used in a wide variety of applications. The strength, durability, and resistance of asbestos were often considered important to its use, but unfortunately it also had its disadvantages.

What is Asbestos Construction Cement?

Asbestos construction cement was a cement made by combining asbestos fibers with cement. The asbestos used was normally chrysotile asbestos and the cement usually Portland. This combination meant that it was considered a virtually indestructible compound due to the benefits of the asbestos. The amount of asbestos in the cement could vary quite widely depending mainly on the manufacturer.

The History of Asbestos Construction Cement

Asbestos cement was first created in the United States in 1905. It was used as a coating on roofs, chimneys, dormer windows, skylights, walls and ceilings. In 1907, asbestos cement was turned into pre-fabricated products when an Austrian engineer made asbestos cement sheets.

The Advantages of Asbestos Construction Cement

As the asbestos and cement were combined, asbestos construction cement had many beneficial properties. Asbestos is strong, durable, and resistant to heat, electricity and chemicals. It is also fireproof. These benefits meant that asbestos construction cement was considered indestructible, and at the same time was also cost-effective and simple to manufacture, which appealed to contractors and manufacturers.

The Disadvantages of Asbestos Construction Cement

Although asbestos construction cement may be strong and almost indestructible, it does eventually get worn, damaged, or disturbed. When this happens, tiny asbestos particles may be released into the atmosphere. Those who then come in contact with it significantly increase their risk of contracting Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related disorders.

Asbestos construction cement has been used since the early 1900’s as a strong, indestructible compound made of asbestos fibers and Portland cement. Unfortunately, for all its benefits, it can also cause a risk to one’s health if the asbestos fibers in the cement are disturbed and released into the air.
