Asbestos is a mineral that is as soft and flexible as cotton or flax, yet it is fireproof and virtually indestructible. Asbestos was commonly used in a number of industries as well as household products. Asbestos exposure causes people to be at risk for developing asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the mesothelial cells that line the chest, abdominal and heart cavities. Each year there are about 2500 new cases of mesothelioma diagnosed in the United States alone. People who have spent years working in industrial jobs where their exposure to asbestos was significant are at the highest risk. The cutting, handling, application, and removal of asbestos products create varying quantities of dust that are distributed into the air and in the surrounding work sites.

Working in or around any of the trades that use asbestos can increase your risk of disease. Even family members washing the workers' clothing can get sick.
