This leads to the main symptom of asbestosis, and that is loss of exercise tolerance, shortness of breath after physical effort. People find that they can no longer do the physical exercise that they were able to do earlier, whether it's climbing ladders, carrying heavy tools, walking quickly uphill. In the beginning, most people who are experiencing this think it's occurring just because they are getting older, because they are out of physical condition, but what they begin to notice is that their loss of exercise tolerance is greater than that of their friends and neighbors who are the same age and who also may be out of shape, but haven't worked with asbestos. So the main symptom of asbestosis is shortness of breath after exercise. Some individuals who develop asbestosis also develop a cough. It's usually a dry cough, unless the individual is also a smoker. Some people with asbestosis also experience chest pain. It's a dull and aching chest pain.
