Video Transcript
The treatment for asbestos related diseases unfortunately until very recently has been disappointing. When we can see that asbestosis and plural scarring. There are no successful treatments. We have no way to remove the asbestos fiber from an individual's lung once it's been inhaled into the lung. The presence of that fiber in the lung acts as a stimulus to further scar formation. This is why asbestosis and plural scarring tend to be progressive diseases even if there is no further exposure from the outside. We have no way to remove the scar tissue that builds up as a consequence to the presence of asbestos fiber in the lung. We do encourage our patients with asbestosis who have suffered some loss of lung function to exercise, to maintain their weight within control. Because, at least, this will preserve their exercise tolerance in the face of the consequences of the scarring process itself.
