Man: Treatments for lung cancer have also been disappointing. In most institutions, when lung cancer has been found as a result of the development of symptoms as opposed to during a screening program, lung cancer has proven very difficult to treat and cure-rates are generally in the range of five to ten percent at best.
An important new technique in the surveillance of asbestos-exposed workers for lung cancer is the low dose CT-scan of the chest. This is an approach that is currently under research investigation but shows great promise of detecting lung cancers when they are very small in size and prior to the time that they have had opportunity to spread to other areas of the body.
The opportunities to actually achieve a surgical cure of early lung cancer may well be greatly enhanced by the use of this new scanning approach and it may well be part of the annual surveillance examination for asbestos-exposed workers.
