Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals consisting of crocidolite, chrysotile, amosite and the fibrous varieties of anthophyllite, actinolite and tremolite. Its crystals form long, thin fibers. So, you will find them in our environment no matter where you are. We are all exposed to low levels of asbestos from the air we breathe in, but the level rises in cities and industrial areas. The asbestos minerals are used in building materials, cements, pipes for construction, electrical/telecommunication services etc.

By now you must be wondering what the fuss is all about and why we are using the material if it’s harmful. Asbestos minerals, on their own, are not harmful to health and don’t contaminate the environment. But, when the asbestos minerals are disturbed, they release minute fibers in the air. Invisible to the naked human eye, these fibers make their way into our lungs when we breathe in the contaminated air, and cause all sorts of deadly diseases.

Where Asbestos Can Be Found in Nursing Homes


- Old pipelines that have not been used for a while and that are being reused.

- Demolition and reconstruction of any part of the building may cause asbestos fibers to be dispelled in the air, and thus contaminate the environment of the nursing homes.

- Common medical and surgical equipment that have not been sterilized

- Pipe and boiler insulations that contain asbestos

Taking adequate precautions can restrict such contamination. Remember, when the asbestos fibers are encapsulated, they don’t have any impact on human health or the environment. Before reusing any old part of the nursing home building, or before any renovation and demolition activities, the EPA or the appropriate authorities should be contacted. Nursing home authorities should make it a point to do the checking at regular intervals. Nursing homes are where people expect to get better, thus the safety of the internal environment should be maintained accordingly.
