Asbestos in Power Plants

Ever since the Industrial Revolution, millions of workers working in factories have been subjugated to long working hours in not the most ideal of situations. People were so busy grabbing the job opportunities that they thought little about the kind of environment or the construction materials that were used during any such construction work. It has been seen plenty of times that such workers working in power plants suffer from health-related problems, while many others have been seriously affected.

Since a long time now, asbestos has been recognized as a dangerous substance, which acts as an air pollutant affecting the health of those who come in close contact with it. Sadly though, even those recognizing the hazards of working with or around asbestos have not treated it very seriously and in many cases industrialists have purposely hidden this fact too.

Exposure to Asbestos in Power Plants

Industrial plants have been virtual breeding grounds for asbestos-related diseases and very little precautions were taken to protect workers who were being affected, even though there’s proof that business owners had adequate knowledge of the same in their plants and factories. As we are all aware, asbestos exposure can cause deadly diseases like mesothelioma, which is a cancerous growth in the lungs due to asbestos deposition. The more worrying or sad part physicians are scared of, is that most individuals do not even know that they have been exposed to this toxic material, because it is microscopic, and the symptoms of the disease are not seen until prolonged years of asbestos inhaling.

Most power plants commonly use asbestos in their equipment and machinery because of its insulating properties. Turbines, boilers, and generators are examples of such asbestos-ingrained machinery found in the power plant scenario.

Precautions for Asbestos Use

These days, thankfully, as a result of bans and warnings on the limited use of asbestos products, the exposure to asbestos fibers has decreased quite dramatically. Today, it is not as common and much less heard of. Hopefully, as this awareness catches on worldwide, fewer and lesser cases of asbestos-related diseases will be reported on a regular basis. NGOs related to environmental protections as well as the US Government have made regulations as far as restricting the use of asbestos is concerned. This will, however, take time to show results because mesothelioma, like other asbestos induced diseases, is a disease that has a lengthy latency period and hence people who were exposed to it long ago are still only starting to fall ill from that exposure.

Under US Government rules, property owners, occupiers, and managers have to legally record the presence and condition of asbestos, and assumed asbestos containing materials, in a certain industrial property.

Apart from this, a risk assessment ascertaining the surety of exposure to asbestos is required for each of these materials found. Any such kind of information needs to be compiled and documented into an asbestos management plan based on the condition, state, or extent of damage possible from the material.
