Asbestos in Prisons

Asbestos, a common material found within any prison complex, can lead to exposure to the dust and tiny particles of asbestos that are very harmful to people. Sadly, within the prisons, this harmful event is a regular affair; one that leads to many asbestos related diseases including mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer.

Where Asbestos Is Found

The possibilities of asbestos dust in the ceilings and tiles of bathrooms, kitchens, and sometimes the prison cells which are regularly accessed by the prisoners and jail workers are common. Many of the asbestos ceiling and tiles have damaged and un-repaired areas, which can occur from causes ranging from natural calamities to prison riots. Even during cleaning and re-construction jobs of the damaged areas, a huge amount of asbestos dust is set free in the atmosphere, affecting everyone within that area, as in most prisons the minimum safety during these jobs are not taken into account. Instead of using the advanced apparatus and following the proper protocols, the prisoners and jail workers do the repairing and cleaning jobs using their uncovered hands, and without masks to protect them, and do not even take any precautions.

A common errand in the prison, namely the removal of trash, regularly happens without following any safety norms. Thus, the risks of the prisoners and jail staff being exposed to asbestos dust are high, as many dust particles from the various damaged asbestos objects have the chances of accumulating within the trash. The proper step is that, even the elimination of any substance with more than 1 percent of asbestos in it, needs proper precautions.

Whether the prisoners, jail workers, or correction officers are doing jobs which make them susceptible to asbestos dust or not, the danger is the same for all. Prolonged and continuous exposure to asbestos can lead to fatal respiratory diseases, and anyone who has to be within the prison walls, did not bargain for any illness when they entered a prison for any reason whatsoever.

What Is Mesothelioma?

Out of various dangerous asbestos related diseases, malignant mesothelioma is fatal. Till a few years back, mesothelioma was a rare form of cancer. Unfortunately, nowadays it is becoming a very common disease among people connected to prisons in any way. Pleural and peritoneal are two types of malignant mesothelioma. Studies show that, negligible to heavy exposure to asbestos alone can cause mesothelioma of a malignant nature to exposed prison workers. It takes a person, affected with mesothelioma, nearly 20 to 50 years to realize that he or she is a patient of this fatal disease as it takes this much time to show its symptoms. To avoid mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases, a regular check-up of people within the prison is a must.
